About Social Security Disability And Supplemental Security Income

The Social Security Administration oversees two programs for disabled individuals:

• Social Security Disability Insurance, also known as SSDI or SSD, is for individuals who worked and paid taxes into the Social Security system before they became disabled. Social Security Disability benefits are awarded regardless of assets or family income. The monthly benefits check is based on how much the individual paid into the system prior to becoming disabled. And like Social Security retirement benefits, SSD benefits can also be paid to the children, widows, or widowers of disabled individuals.
• Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, is needs-based program for individuals who have very limited income and assets, and it is available to any disabled person, regardless of their work history. SSI is a safety net for people who, because of their disabilities, have never worked or didn’t work enough years to get SSD benefits. The fixed monthly payment helps cover basic living costs. To qualify, family assets and income cannot be over a certain limit.

The definition of disability is the same for both SSD and SSI, and the claims process for each is very similar. The primary difference between the two is higher benefits may be obtained under SSD, and there is a limit on assets and incomes for SSI.
